We preserve the past
We rethink the future
The documents preserved by the Cagliari State Archives cover a period from the Middle Ages to the present day and provide material evidence of the island’s institutional, social, economic, and cultural history.
Maps, parchments, registers, and archives help convey the complexity of historical processes, making it possible to understand individuals, societies, and territories over time.
Archival heritage is not conceived as a mere repository of documents, but as a collective memory entrusted to public responsibility.
Through preservation, arrangement, and description, the Archive makes this heritage accessible and transmissible over time, fostering research, study, and the informed use of sources.
In this perspective, custody is not a static act, but an ongoing process that allows memory to remain alive and meaningful both for present and future generations.

The role of the Archive is not limited to preservation, but extends to the responsibility of making memory an active tool for knowledge, participation, and the protection of rights.
Through teaching, outreach, collaboration with organisations and institutions, and the use of digital tools, the Archive helps strengthen the relationship between documentary heritage and the community.
In this perspective, enhancement is a continuous process that accompanies the evolving needs of society and changing ways of accessing knowledge.
Memory is a common good: it grows when it is shared.

The project initiatives of the Cagliari State Archives are brought together under the Archivio e Orizzonti (Archives and horizons) brand. The latter is the umbrella through which the institution develops initiatives, experiments, and pathways of cultural innovation, with particular attention to the interplay between innovation and tradition.
Within this framework, the Archive explores new tools, new initiatives, and new ways of enjoying documentary heritage. It promotes dialogue with the worlds of research, education and culture and strengthens the link between archives, communities, and the territory.
Archivio e Orizzonti is not just a section of the site, but a vision of the future. In fact, this is a space where stewardship of the past is intertwined with the ability to question the present and imagine the future.
In this context, cultural projects, digital initiatives, collaborations, and experimental activities converge to renew archival practices and forms of access to knowledge.
The project dimension thus becomes a tool for rethinking the role of the Archive as an open cultural infrastructure, capable of generating meaning, participation, and innovation over time.
In addition to the section you are currently viewing, the website of the Cagliari State Archives is organised into thematic sections that respond to different needs for consultation, exploration, and participation.
