Term: Classification

Code assigned to a documentary unit or archival unit (usually a file) that indicates its logical position within a classification system, generally expressed through a filing plan (see entry).
Classification can be represented by numeric or alphanumeric codes. Classification codes must not be confused with archival shelfmarks (see entry), although they may form part of them.
