Term: Shelf mark

Physical position of an archival unit (see entry) within its container and within the repositories, expressed by the archival shelf mark. For practical reasons, certain types of archival units may have a particular location, separate from that of the other units belonging to the same archival complex (for example registers, budgets, financial statements). In such cases, the relationship – the so‑called archival bond (see entry) – is ensured by appropriate cross‑references inserted in the description.
