Term: Archival series

Component part of a fonds that brings together a group of archival units (see entry) organised according to a specific criterion. The aggregation may have taken place either during the formation of the archive or in the course of subsequent arrangement activities. An archival series may comprise documentation that is homogeneous in formal terms but heterogeneous in legal or administrative content. Conversely, it may bring together documentation that is formally heterogeneous. The records are kept together because they result from the same process of accumulation, the same activity, or because they relate to the same subject matter.
