Term: Register of incoming and outgoing correspondence

Register on which documents sent and received by an institution are recorded daily. The transcription of the essential identifying elements of the document provides evidence of its authenticity and is the operation through which a document becomes an integral part of an archive.
In diplomatics, “protocol” also denotes the initial part of the document. In drafting a document, a defined structure is followed that distinguishes three essential parts: protocol, text, eschatocol.
